Teaching artist

Creative learning experiences that inspire curiosity, build confidence, and connect people through art.

As a teaching artist, I design and facilitate hands-on art experiences for schools, libraries, museums, recreation centers, arts organizations, and community events. I've taught young people in classrooms, summer camps, and arts centers, as well as older adults in senior living communities and adult day health programs. My workshops encourage participants of all ages and experience levels to explore their creativity, build confidence, and connect with one another through the creative process.

I develop custom lessons and original curricula tailored to each audience and setting, drawing on my experience as a muralist, community engagement facilitator, and public artist. My workshops have explored subjects including public art, environmental science, art history, music, and creative reuse through interdisciplinary, hands-on learning experiences.

Teaching doesn't always happen in a classroom.

Selected Partnerships

As an independent teaching artist, I have partnered with schools, arts organizations, recreation centers, and community organizations to develop and facilitate customized workshops and educational programs throughout the Washington, DC region. My teaching partnerships include DC Public Schools, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (MD), Chesapeake Arts Center, The Hill Center's EAST Workshop Series, the City of Alexandria Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, IONA Washington Home Center Adult Day Health Center, and the Artbae Foundation.

Featured Curriculum

Every workshop I lead is thoroughly researched and thoughtfully designed for its audience and setting. Featured below are selected learning experiences that integrate visual arts with subjects including public art, environmental science, music, and community engagement.

  • Developed a three-part curriculum for third-grade students exploring the many roles of public art. Students learned how murals can tell community stories, how artists scale small sketches into large-scale designs, and how curb extension murals can improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers. The program culminated in students designing imagery for two permanent curb extension murals as part of the FY2025 Color the Curb School Safety Grant, funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, at Maury Elementary School, a DC Public School in Washington, DC.

  • Designed a week-long summer camp curriculum for students in grades 2–5 that connected visual arts with ecological science. Through hands-on projects, students explored topics including tree root communication through mycelium networks, seed germination, ecosystems, and Earth science while creating sculptures, mixed-media artwork, and observational studies inspired by the natural world. Developed for the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park, Maryland.

  • Co-developed a four-part interdisciplinary curriculum with teaching artist Devin Walker (The Uncle Devin Show) for older adults participating in the FY2022-23 Create & Thrive! program funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Each session paired creative percussion with a visual arts lesson, exploring artists such as David Hammons and contemporary artist Emon Surakitkoson, while participants created body art-inspired works, handmade percussion instruments, textured paintings, and hand drums using upcycled materials and everyday objects at the IONA Washington Home Center : Adult Day Health Center.
